The "intertwined agonies of South Africa and Zimbabwe" (Philip Gourevitch)
Last month the impoverished townships and shantytowns of South Africa exploded in xenophobic mob violence against foreigners. There are millions of people from other African countries living in South Africa, many of them illegal or semi-legal immigrants. They were targeted as scapegoats for crime, high prices, and inadequate housing, accused of taking jobs away from South Africans, and so on. (Sound familiar?)
So who are these foreigners? Well, they come from all over sub-Saharan Africa, but it happens that the largest group by far, perhaps even a majority, are refugees from Zimbabwe. Since 2000, while Robert Mugabe and his ZANU-PF regime have been systematically destroying Zimbabwe--with the protection and collusion of South Africa's President Thabo Mbeki--millions of Zimbabweans have fled the country in desperation, and the great bulk of them are now in South Africa.
In short, what Philip Gourevitch correctly describes (in the article below) as Mbeki's "sinister solidarity" with Mugabe has not only been a morally indefensible betrayal of Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwean people. It has also had disastrous consequences for his own country.
The mind-boggling wrong-headedness of Mbeki's policy, along with the unwillingness of too many other African governments to confront or even criticize Mugabe, obviously have a number of causes. But it's clear that, at least in part, they represent vestiges of an ideological outlook that was shaped by the experience of liberation struggles against colonialism and white-supremacist regimes, but which has now become--certainly in Mbeki's case--politically blind and morally bankrupt.
Those same criticisms apply to other governments and individuals around the world who are willing to act as apologists for the tyranny of Mugabe and his regime on spurious "anti-imperialist" grounds--and, alas, there are too many of them, too.
