national character

One version of an old joke (from Normblog). --Jeff Weintraub

----------------------------------------------------------------

A joke from Mike Leigh's play Two Thousand Years, as relayed by Simon Hoggart:

An American, a Russian, a Chinese man, and an Israeli are at a street corner when a pollster comes up. He says, "Excuse me, what is your opinion of the meat shortage?"

The American says "What's a shortage?" The Russian says, "What's meat?" The Chinese chap says, "What is an opinion?" and the Israeli asks: "What is 'excuse me'?"
